Our Approach Print E-mail

Marie Ewart - Autumn Care General ManagerMarie Ewart, Autumn Care’s General Manager, began her career over 25 years ago in aged care, working as a nurse in a country hospital. Since then she has worked in all areas of nursing and completed studies in both psychiatry and naturopathy. Here she talks about our approach to caring for the aged.

At Autumn Care, we believe it important to recognise the individualityof the people who live in our homes, both to ensure we provide the carethe individual needs and to acknowledge and appreciate people’s livesprior to moving into the home.

We put this belief into practice in anumber of ways.

Each resident receives an initial appraisal as they arrive in our homesand this is followed by a detailed assessment over the next 28 days, looking at health requirements as well as individual preferences inareas such as meals and activities. A comprehensive care program isdeveloped, enabling every staff member to know how to deliver the careand support needed for that person.

We encourage residents to personalise their areas and to celebrate personal milestones. Photos and pictures help create a sense of home. Visits from family and friends are welcomed and, with some advance notice to allow catering and organisation, we can help you celebrate special occasions together.

This individual approach extends to Autumn Care’s homes. Each Autumn Care home has its own personality – we don’t believe that one shape fits all and we encourage each home to develop a personality that suits its own residents and staff. At Sherbrooke, for instance, football is very popular so we have an annual football day, footy tipping and Foxtel broadcasts. Along with a commitment to great care, it’s all part of building an environment where personal interests can continue to be enjoyed.
